It is the longest day of the year, starts getting light at 4:30 am, and it is officially summer. Birds wake up early this time of year! Many mornings they are loud enough to wake me up!! I love the sound, though, so I don’t mind.
Imagine this planet without birds! . . . You know what? I can’t do that!
Birds have been a part of my life as long as I can remember. When I was a child, my Dad decided we should raise pigeons, so we built a coop and got pigeons. We had them for several years, but eventually just let them join all the other pigeons in the city . . . But while we had them, they were so fun to watch. I loved their cooing and other sounds. We threw scratch for them on our patio so we could watch them close up. The friendliest one stayed with us the longest. We were able to pet her in the coop, and she came when she heard the scratch being thrown.
We always had bird feeders out, too, so we could watch the variety of birds it attracted out our back door. Inside, we had parakeets or finches. After I grew up and left home, my Mom started raising finches. At one point she had over 600 birds that she sold around the country. They were beautiful! The Gouldians were my favorites. So colorful!
Then there were the cute little owl finches.
The sound of 600+ tiny finches in the aviaries was amazing!
Husband and I had a few of those finches until we moved to Stehekin. While we had them, Husband designed some beautiful bird cages . . . Wish I had a picture!
Now, living in Stehekin, all the birds are wild around us in the trees and bushes. I hear the Veery, robin, pine siskins, varied thrush, Says Phoebe, owls, hummingbirds and many more I cannot identify. I have the Merlin app which can identify them for me, because I cannot always see them in the tall trees around here. So fun!
Interesting thing about the hummingbirds is that they arrive on April 14 or 15 and ar gone by August 15. They fly all the way from Brazil, or so I am told. Amazing little creatures . . . God’s amazing design.
Being near Lake Chelan, we also get to enjoy many water birds . . . Canada geese, of course . . . They seem to be everywhere. In the winter we get a number of trumpeter swans that like to winter over on the lake. We have Margansers, golden eye, buffle heads, an occasional loon, mallards, grebes, even sea gulls. I know I missed some.
God is amazing. I know I say that a lot! Think about all the different birds there are in the world. How can anyone think there is no divine Creator? Evolution? Poppycock!
“Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.”” Genesis 1:20 I would not have wanted to be Noah trying to contain all the different species of birds in the ark! “also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth.” Genesis 7:3 What a cacophony that must have been!
Whatever things are lovely . . . Birds are lovely.
“ He sends the springs into the valleys; They flow among the hills. By them the birds of the heavens have their home; They sing among the branches. The trees of the Lord are full of sap, The cedars of Lebanon which He planted, Where the birds make their nests; The stork has her home in the fir trees. O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions—”Psalms 104:10, 12, 16-17, 24 . “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.” Matthew 10:29 “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26
God loves His birds! But He loves us even more . . . so much more that He gave us a way to return to Him through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And when we follow Jesus, our Father God takes care of us, just like the birds he created. What a gift are the songs of God’s birds. And what a gift is the life we are given in Jesus! That gift of life in Jesus helps make our enjoyment of God’s creatures even more meaningful. We can praise God for who He is, for His magnificence, and when we hear bird song.
Think on these things when the world seems to be out of control. God is in charge . . . His plan is perfect.
